Church of Mary Help of Christians - Don Bosco Mission, Bagalur
The parish was entrusted to the Salesians by a contract with the Local Ordinary for 3 years in 2001, pending its being handed over to the Salesians in perpetuity. One and a half acres of the land, on which the Church and the presbytery stand, belongs to the diocese, and 3 and a half acres are registered in the name of the South India Society. The Parish comprises of about 55 Catholic families at Bagalur. In all, there are 3 Basic Christian Communities (Anbiams) which meet once a week. The Vincent de Paul Society (10 members) and the Legion of Mary (8 members), are the 2 pious associations of the Parish, besides the Parish Choir (10 members) and Altar servers (12 members). The commemoration of Mary Help of Christians on every 24th, and of Don Bosco on the 31st of the month, is held regularly, and on all Fridays, Eucharistic adoration is conducted. Around 20 children attend the weekly Sunday catechism classes, which are animated by the Sisters of St. Anne’s of Madhavaram. There is no functional parish council. The Evening Study centre is a praise-worthy apostolate for the neighbourhood. More than 70 poor children (30 boys and 40 girls) attend these evening classes, assisted by 2 lay teachers. The Computer Centre (30 students) and Tailoring Unit (15 students), started by the Parish a few years ago and assisted by 2 trained staff, still cater to the needs of the local youth,. The parish employs 1 Catechist, 1 office staff and 3 domestic staff.
