St. Francis Xavier’s Shrine
The Parish
Devotion to Mary Help of Christians is the hallmark of the Parish and this devotion has grown over the years. Holy masses are celebrated twice on weekdays and 5 times on Sunday. Every second Sunday there is a Baptismal Mass and every third Sunday, a special youth mass. The Marian Shrine draws thousands of devotees on every 24th of the month, on which day 4 masses are celebrated, including a special mass for pilgrims at 10.30 a.m. The Parish feast is celebrated on the first Sunday of December every year. The Parish has a Catholic population of 715 families, and 1 Substation, opposite Clive Battery of the Chennai Port Trust, with 35 poor Catholic families, who attend the Sunday Eucharist celebrated in the chapel of the SMA Convent, dedicated to Annai Velankanni Arokia Madha. The parish is divided into 32 Anbiams. Each Anbiam meets once a month, and Holy Eucharist is celebrated for them every other month. Importance is given to the Sunday Catechism classes with nearly 400 children, from Stds. I to XII in attendance every week, assisted by 22 teachers. The Parish Council, which meets regularly once a month, consists of 32 representatives from the 32 Anbiams, representatives of the various pious associations and groups, 6 heads of religious institutions, 1 catechist, 1 choir master and 7 members nominated by the parish priest. The FMA Sisters, the Sisters of St. Anne of Madras and the SMA Sisters help out in the various activities of the Parish.

Several significant improvements have been made in the Parish premises, such as the renovation of the Shrine, its offices and its surroundings.
Neighbourhood Apostolate of the Parish
Free medical services are offered to poor people through the St. Camillus Dispensary, and other forms of material assistance, such as disbursement of money to students at the beginning of the academic year for studies, distribution of sarees to poor women once a year, giving out of dole to the destitute on Fridays (only money) and Sundays (money and rice). An evening study centre has been started this year, with the help of a lay person, where about 10 children come regularly.
St. Dominic Savio Matriculation School
The Dominic Savio Preparatory School is being upgraded to a Matriculation School. Presently, there are 626 students (341 boys and 285 girls), among whom 91 are Catholics. The most deserving among them are given fee concessions. The staff consists of 19 female teachers, all Catholics. Catechism and Moral Science instructions are given daily, and Holy Eucharist is celebrated on the First Friday of every month. The School has the following active groups: Liturgical Association, Cubs and Bulbuls, Science Club, English & Tamil Academies and Fine Arts Club. |
