DON BOSCO ANBU ILLAM - KAVARAPETTAI
Anbu Illam - Home Away from Home
Don Bosco “Home Away From Home” is not just another orphanage. It is a home where there is love, food, clothing, shelter and above all the warm feeling of security, for those who have lived and led an emotionally and materially insecure life in an atmosphere of distrust, betrayal and shattered family ties. It is a centre for education and skill development. At present, there are about 67 children, looked after completely by the Salesians. The director of the house meets them individually at least once a month. Their spiritual needs are looked after by regular masses, rosary, night prayer and goodnight talks. There are 2 house mothers, 4 teaching staff and 10 domestic staff.
The 35 children suitable for schooling are sent to 2 neighboring government schools situated in Panpakkam village and Kavarapettai. They frequent classes from 2nd Std. to 12th Std. There is also a non–formal technical institute, which provides 5 courses: carpentry, welding, tailoring, electrician and motor mechanism. Motor mechanism and tailoring courses are temporarily suspended due to lack of running expenses towards the salary of the instructors and other maintenance problems. There are at present 3 trained instructors available in the centre to teach carpentry (9 boys), electrical (14 boys) and welding (7 boys) trades. Boys of all the 3 trades are given one-hour theory classes and 4 hours of practicals. The non-formal training boys have to complete either Std. VIII or Std. X. For this, 2 teachers are hired, and take classes morning and evening On the whole, the vocational training boys are kept busy and show interest in their learning. Besides these 5 courses, the Institute also runs a auto-service center. This is an income generation programme, which is slowly picking up.
