The Problem
The disturbing plight of the rural and underprivileged youth vis-à-vis the bleak employment scenario in India at large and Tamilnadu in particular.
Background
The economic background of most of the rural and underprivileged urban youth is very critical. The total earning of the family would in no way satisfy even their basic needs. Even the poor income that they earn is irregular. These youngsters have no proper guidance and get lost in life. They become totally demoralized with no one to support in any way. They hold very poor status in society and are therefore denied a lot of privileges.
The Solution
Providing proper guidance, motivation, training and assistance to the desperate youth.
The Result
Eventually launched in 1997 the ‘Don Bosco Centre for Job Placement and Career Guidance’, aptly named “Vazhikaatti” by the Salesian Province of Chennai. The centre renders its service to the poor, underprivileged, deserving and abandoned youth of Northern Tamilnadu. The youth mainly rural who are educated are not able to find proper jobs due to lack of guidance. There are thousands of youngsters who need to be guided. The Vision of this centre is mainly focused on these youth for their career and referral job placement, so that they can achieve the goals in their life.
The Vision Statement
Vazhikaatti’s Vision is to create a better society through its services by which the poorest of the poor of Tamilnadu are empowered, to make informed and reasoned decisions, to acquire a career, that will result in better economic conditions which will enable them to participate in the progress of the country and enjoy the same status, rights and responsibilities of the Children of God.
The Objectives
To offer referral job placements.
To motivate and guide youngsters to take up self-employment schemes in their own areas.
To organize group employment scheme to the poor rural youth and women groups.
To organize for skill based & need based training programme
To organize Employability preparedness training programs for youngsters going for job interviews.
To guide the students to choose their career according to their Interest, Aptitude, Attitude, Personality, Intelligence and Economic background.
To provide information on various academic Institutions and study centres which offer Formal, Non-formal, Academic and Technical education.
To educate the student on resource and support systems such as government scholarships, stipends, private aids, hostel facilities, cost of courses and application procedures.
To provide individual guidance to choose proper career at the request of the individual who may approach the centre.

Economically poor and desperate rural youngsters and students. Unskilled, semiskilled and skilled job seekers. Parents and Teachers.

Methodology
The basic methodology of the centre has been enhanced and formed in a threefold basis, for effective implementation and execution of the objectives.
F I T
Formation - To form them by shaping their talents and inner qualities and train them in areas like ‘soft skills’ required to be successful in highly competitive situations.
We conduct ‘Residential Job-Oriented Training’ and ‘Residential Driving Training’ Programmes for the youth to form them with all the necessary skills needed to take up a job and grow satisfactorily in their life. ‘Self-employment Training’ Programmes are also conducted to encourage our youth in forming an entrepreneurship spirit within them, towards starting fruitful small-scale businesses. Resource personnel with high-end practical knowledge and experience are engaged in forming this skill within our youth.
Information - To inform the poor rural youth of the various opportunities available in the fields of education and employment both in the government and in the private sectors.
We conduct job-orientation programmes to update the youth regularly on such details and information. Circulars are sent on the prevailing opportunities, with details on the process of applying for the same.
Transformation - To transform these youth from their lack of self-confidence and inferiority complex, by means of individual motivation and group orientation programmes.
Weekly Motivation Programmes are conducted to transform the desperate youth from their state of negative feeling to positive thinking and achievement. These youth are followed up regularly to keep track of their progress.
